Elizabeth Ball and De la Frontera Win Dressage Warmbloods’ Intermediere I Open
May 27, 2008
Pam Moss of Dressage Warmbloods presented her Warmbloods’ award to the rider and owner of De la Frontera. Ridden by Elizabeth Ball, the mare won Saturday’s Open Intermediere I with a 69.625 percent. De La Frontera is a 10-year-old Oldenberg mare by DeNiro and out of Elena by Argentinius. She is owned by USEF dressage judge Cauleen Glass who affectionately calls the mare Malia, Hawaiian for beloved. Glass purchased the horse from Jan Ebeling’s barn, and Ball, her trainer, approved her choice. When Glass learned that Ball, who had won both the I-I and I-II Championships in 2005, was without a horse to compete, she offered her Malia. She commented, “As a judge, and a supporter of the sport, I feel that it is my responsibility to offer opportunities to top riders.” Ball has been schooling the mare exclusively since December, while Glass has “girl time” with her horse and trail rides her before and after schooling sessions.

Later in Saturday’s schedule, Ball won the Open Prix St. Georges, always a hotly contended class, on Verena Ekstein’s Orion with an impressive score of 69.00 percent. Ball grew up in Northern California and rode under the mentorship of Lilo Fore.

She has ridden since a junior in high school and moved up through the levels, winning innumerable championships through to the Pan Am Games with her talented horse, Bolshoi. She moved to the San Diego area six years ago in order to work with Guenter Seidel. She currently operates a training barn in Fairbanks Ranch.
